Published March 12, 2010 @ 10 p.m.

The Springfield Fire Department would like to remind you that on March 14, Daylight Saving Time, it is a good time to maintain your smoke detector. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and also the following.

Smoke alarm is powered by a 9-volt battery

  • Replace battery at least once per year.
  • Replace entire unit every 8-10 years

Smoke Alarm Powered by a 10-year lithium ("long life") battery

  • Since you cannot (and should not) replace the lithium battery, the entire smoke alarm unit should be replaced according to manufacturer's instructions.

Smoke Alarm that is hardwired into the Home's Electrical System

  • Replace backup battery at least once per year.
  • Replace entire unit every 8-10 years

Smoke alarms should be installed inside and outside of sleeping areas and on every level of your home, including the basement.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, between 2003-2006, more than 66 percent of home fire deaths occurred in homes without a working smoke alarm.
