MOLLY SUHADOLNIK: In order to determine whether or not you are making progress with your running, you need a way to track it. There are lots of different ways to track runs. Fancy watches, pedometers, journals, etc. What is best for you? Check out these options and see which fits you best.
Pedometers- Pedometers are a great way of tracking progress. If you want to invest in a pedometer, I would suggest doing some research and spending no less than $30. Typically the price does reflect quality. There are lots of things to look for on a pedometer. There are multiple features you may/may not want such as: step counter, calorie counter, timer, distance tracker, belt clip, lanyard, computer software, etc. Check out this website to see which pedometer looks the best to fit your needs: http://www.consumersearch.com/pedometers
Watches- Timing yourself on your runs is key. Scientifically speaking, (force x time) /distance= power. In order to progress, you want to increase power output. If you are not losing/gaining weight, the variable is time. The faster you can run a set distance, the more powerful you are. Watches have several features to look for: stopwatch function, memory, splits, time function, waterproof, heart rate monitor, calorie counter, illuminated screen etc. I have used a $50 Timex Ironman watch for over 2 years and it still works great. The strap is a little worn, but superglue is a quick, cheap fix. Here is the Timex Ironman watch website where you can compare which watch is best for you: http://www.timex.com/Sport-Ironman-Products-Products/b/2223481011
Mapping- Have you ever run around your block and wondered what the actual distance was? I have gone to the extent of driving the path I ran to see how far it was! In order to avoid going to that extreme, check out this website: http://www.runningmap.com/ It allows you to precisely map out your running path and gives an exact distance. You are also able to save the running map and print it out. This is a great tool and allows you to run wherever you want!
Tracking- Do you need a place to neatly organize and track your progress? Check out http://traininglog.runnersworld.com/landingpage.aspx Set up a FREE account and see how this can help you. It allows for distance, time, date, route, calories, weather, and more. It is also set up so that you can include biking, swimming, weight training and other cross training. After you have tracked some workouts, you are able to see them broken down into graphs by whatever time period you would like. It is worth the 5 minutes to sign up!
